Dr. Samura Kamara, the Presidential Candidate of the All People's Congress (APC) party, issued an ultimatum calling for the resignation of Chief Electoral Commissioner Mohamed Konneh and his deputies, citing concerns about the selection process. The deadline for their resignation is today.
Kamara's ultimatum was announced on Wednesday, expressing his lack of confidence in the Electoral Commission for not following proper procedures in selecting Konneh. He demanded that Konneh and all regional commissioners step down by Friday. With only a week remaining until the elections, Kamara's actions reflect his doubts regarding the integrity of the ECSL. He further appealed to the international community to oversee the electoral process.
In response, Konneh firmly stated that he and his team would not comply with the demands put forth by the APC candidate. "We will not resign," he affirmed.
Sierra Leone is scheduled to hold a multi-tiered election on June 24, which is only eight days away. The political atmosphere is already charged with tension between the ruling Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) and the main opposition APC.
