The Deputy Minister of Information And Civic Education, Yusuf Keketoma Sandi inaugurated a technical conference focusing on media governance, media management, media digitalization, and ethics on Thursday, September 14.
This conference was arranged by the Independent Media Commission (IMC) to provide training for journalists across the nation. He emphasized his unwavering commitment to executing his responsibilities with candor, humility, honesty, and courage, regardless of any criticism or abuse.
Addressing the issue of media ethics, he underscored the pivotal role played by the media in our democracy and urged journalists to enhance their ethical standards to elevate their professional conduct.
He expressed his firm belief that, at times, the media's platform for free speech can be exploited by those who engage in unethical, indecent, and vulgar behaviour, which can undermine the credibility of media outlets.
The Deputy Minister pointed out that no one in public service should be subjected to such vulgarity. Whether driven by political motives or other factors, it highlighted the fact that safeguarding ethical standards on media platforms can sometimes extend beyond the control of journalists.
Additionally, he reiterated the government's dedication to collaborating with IMC, SLAJ, and other stakeholders to assess and reinforce the current governance and management regulations for media institutions.
