Sierra Leonean female boxer Sara Haghighat-Joo has advanced to the semi-finals of the Paris 2024 African Qualifiers. Her qualification was secured through a unanimous decision by all five judges after three rounds against Gisele Muamba Nyenbo from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The continental qualifying event for Paris 2024 is scheduled to run from September 9th to September 15th at the Dakar Arena. Sara previously represented Canada but switched her allegiance to Sierra Leone earlier this year.
Haghighat-Joo, known for her orthodox boxing style, had also attempted to represent Ireland in the past but was unsuccessful. Her decision to represent the West African nation came about after her grandmother revealed a generational connection to the country.
Sierra Leone has never secured an Olympic Games medal, but Sara's promising career is seen as a potential game-changer in that regard.
Sierra Leoneans, both within the country and abroad, are filled with confidence in Sara's qualification following her impressive nine-minute performance in the quarter-final stage.
Paris 2024 is anticipated to welcome a fresh wave of Olympians, with a unique and spirited international celebration of athletic prowess on the horizon.
